With the availability of more sophisticated methods of traffic data collection increasing demands are being placed on traffic engineers to provide better quality data for a variety of purposes connected with the planning and design of highways. Traffic flow parameters are also needed for various other applications, such as surveillance and control systems and in connection with general road safety matters.
