The Second World Congress on Safety of Transportation, held February 18-20, 1998 in the Netherlands had as its theme the possible imbalance of growth and safety. The Congress was hosted by the Delft University of Technology and included speakers from all modalities of transportation - aviation, shipping, railroads, roads and pipelines. Emphases were placed on context and policy, modality and nationality, and research methods and common agenda. Twenty-nine countries were represented at the Congress, bringing together about 275 people discussing over 70 papers. Participants came from industry, safety boards, research institutes, policy making, and victim organisations. (A)
