Abstract

The paper brings together the latest available research on key LATM treatment types, especially their effects on controlling vehicle speeds, design characteristics influencing speed and scheme-wide crash reduction potential. This information can be directly applied by traffic and transport practitioners in the speed-based design of LATM schemes, as described in the current Austroads guidelines. Design characteristics influencing speed reduction have been researched and presented for selected treatments. This will add further confidence in creating effective LATM designs. The overview provides crash reduction factors where available to indicate the expected improvements in safety as a result of providing an LATM scheme.
