Abstract

The key points in assessing and improving the safety of road infrastructure are considered for inter-urban roads under the headings: quality of infrastructure and accident rates, road design, safety audit, accident analysis and prevention, traffic calming and the effect of speed, methodological problems in evaluation, accident costs, safety at road works, and national programs. Current experience and recommended good practice in Western European countries is explained.
