Abstract

This paper describes the methodology employed by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario to upgrade their aging communications infrastructure from a proprietary based system to a standards based network. As the initial deployment of ITS systems reaches their design life, the equipment must be upgraded while maintaining system operations. The communications infrastructure is unique to other ITS components since it affects the operation of the overall system and cannot be easily isolated from the other subsystems. This paper addresses the issues and the methodologies used to migrate from the existing to the new communications equipment. (A*)
