Implementation of power-based fuel consumption and environmental emissions models in traffic simulation.

Abstract

This paper presents findings from the implementation of two Australian models of fuel consumption and environmental emissions in a microscopic traffic simulator. The four-mode elemental emissions model (implemented in aaSIDRA) and the power-based motor vehicle emissions models developed by CSIRO Energy Technology were interfaced to the AIMSUN traffic simulator using the Application Programming Interface. Microscopic traffic simulation provides a number of advantages for this type of work through detailed modelling of road geometry and grade, driver behaviour, vehicle performance and traffic parameters. The instantaneous emissions models were applied to each vehicle on the road network to provide second-by-second fuel consumption and pollutant emissions on a section-by-section or network-wide basis. The study also examined a number of abstract vehicle types and collected detailed information about their speed profiles, acceleration, deceleration, fuel consumptions and pollutant emissions. The paper also compares the performance of the two models against various standard tests of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.
