Abstract

In the past few years there has been a large increase in the amount of passenger and goods carrying transport. Growing traffic jams and delays have resulted. The damage to the economy in 1995 in the Netherlands as a consequence of congestion was in excess of 1.4 billion guilders. Forecasts point to yet further increases in congestion on the motorway network. Investigations have shown that traffic information can make a significant contribution towards reducing these congestion problems. The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (MoT) has the following intentions concerning in-car traffic information: The MoT will create the necessary conditions for national coverage of RDS-TMC to come into effect in 1998. In order to implement the policy with respect to traffic information, the MoT has formed the Implementation Co-ordination Group EuroDelta Traffic Information (ICG). This paper presents an overview of the objectives, tasks, organisation and achievements of the Implementation Co-ordination Group and its related projects since the group started mid 1995. (A)
