Abstract

In this article the range of uses to which accident data are put by local authorities is described in some detail. Additional information for the STATS19 form (the form on which accidents are recorded by police) is suggested. Such additional information could relate to: accident causation factors based on reporting officers' assessments or the main cause or causes of each accident from which information could be gained for the design of road accident remedial schemes; recording the name of school attended by school age children, and the postcoding of casualties (if local to the area) could be used in targetting groups of people at risk on the wider road network.
