Abstract

Real-time speed is an important input for traffic control and management systems. However it cannot be measured directly by single-loop detectors, which have been used for decades and widely deployed. Dual-loop detectors can measure the speed but the number of them is insufficient to meet practical needs. Besides, expenses of deploying dual-loop detectors or upgrading single ones to dual are quite high. The researcher D.J. Dailey developeda Kalman filter based method. This method is considered and some improvements to it for practical applications are described. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
