Abstract

This paper discusses integration opportunities for the provision of good and efficient bus services using open standards and similarly structured protocols illustrated in three examples. The first shows the integration oftwo bespoke RTI (real time information) systems as carried out this year in Birmingham, UK. The second example details how the same communications system can serve different purposes, demonstrating how an overarching communications strategy needs to capture all the requirements. The third example illustrates how an RTI-UTC (urban traffic control) server to server link for Selective Vehicle Detection can remove the need for short range communications between the bus and the traffic light controller.
