Abstract

Motorcycling is an important and popular mode of transport, which has several advantages over other forms of means of transport (environmental care, flexibility, efficient use of roads and parking space etc.). Despite of these advantages, motorcycling is also associated with a significant accident and casualty risk (17 per cent of total deaths in EU roads are related to powered two wheels). Moreover, the number of fatalities and serious injured people in motorcycle accidents has remained almost constant in the past years. Within the APROSYS IP (Integrated Project on Advanced Protection Systems), the Sub project 4 is focussed on the improvement of motorcyclist safety through passive safety devices. The methodology applied consists in the selection of the most sever scenarios through the analysis of different accident databases (both at intensive and extensive level). Once these scenarios have been identified, specific studies related to the road infrastructure and the rider (helmet and clothing improvement) will be carried out. Special attention will be paid to metal barriers and to the development of innovative impact protectors that could be implemented in the rider garment. Moreover, it is intended to analyze the feasibility of passive safety devices that could be activated during an accident using different sensors to identify the crash characteristics. At the conclusion of the project, it is expected to deliver a set of guidelines for a test procedure to evaluate and validate infrastructure devices for motorcyclists and also different innovative measures that could help in the improvement of the performance of the personal protective equipment of the rider (A).
