Abstract

The purpose of this report is to provide local officials with a greater understanding of the roadway safety issues they are facing and general guidance on how these issues might best be addressed. An important step in improving roadway safety is the careful identification of a community or corridor's safety problems and the solutions to them. The report provides a description of the major roadway problems identified in contemporary safety research and the countermeasures known to be effective for addressing them. It also highlights some of the important knowledge gaps which must be resolved if continued progress is to be achieved. (A)
