Child car restraint use is lower in rural localities. This project evaluates an intervention targeted at 4-6 year old rural school children. Rewards will be given to children using restraints, parents given access to child restraints, and fitting clinics held in school car parks to encourage appropriate use of child car restraints. Child car restraints are now the focus for research in Western Australia. This paper describes a novel approach targeting rural school children in an area where there is a large proportion of indigenous children and children of Italian descent. The authors describe how the project trials an incentive scheme for children, and represents a collaboration between RACWA, a commercial company that provides child car restraints, and local primary school teachers.
