Abstract

The Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) launched a project named 'Active, communicative packaging systems' in 2002 for the transport supply chain. The main aim was to develop and integrate active, communicative packaging with an effective logistical system for sensitive products. The developed system is based on intelligent coding, wireless communications and data networks. It can monitor the location of the package and indicate its condition (temperature, humidity, acceleration or electric dischagre). The benefits of the system are outlined and the potential applications of the system in the electronics industry and food industry are described. The equipment and features of the first demonstration unit are outlined.
