Increasing safety by removing visual cues : a contradiction ?

Abstract

This paper presents results from a research project in the Netherlands, which included visual guidance as one part of a set of measures to decrease driving speed on 80 km/h roads. The measures to be taken were divided into three groups: visual guidance, speed-limit reminders and road-surface structure. The effects of the measures were evaluated in various ways, including by monitoring driving speed and accident data, and assessing appraisal and acceptance of the measures. The reduction in speed was not found to be very substantial and the effect of the measures on speed also showed signs of wearing off. In spite of this relatively small speed effect, there was a remarkable reduction in accidents and casualties. (A)
