Independent mobility and children's physical development.

Abstract

This chapter considers the amount of exercise taken by British children and how it could be increased. A number of studies are briefly described which measured the number of children taking vigorous exercise for 10 and 20 minute periods. Figures are compared for boys and girls and for primary and secondary level. Very few children exercised to the recommended level and a particular drop in activity was seen in girls of secondary school age. It is suggested that attitudes towards physical activity are established at an early age. Parents are particularly valuable in providing a role model. The role of physical activity at school is considered. There is a need to encourage 'activity independence'. At primary school level a lack of suitably qualified teachers is identified. At secondary school a cross curricular programme should promote and active lifestyle.
