Abstract

This paper reports the results of tests designed to determine the effect of evenness of road surface on skid resistance. Stopping distances were measured on test sections of road with varying evenness numbers. A mobile profilometer was used to perform evenness measurements; other parameters measured were skid resistance and variation curve. Stopping distance measurements were performed and showed a correlation with surface evenness: each decrease in the evenness number corresponded to an increase in the stopping distance. The author concludes that construction authorities should pay greater attention to ensuring surface evenness.
