Abstract

One of the measures to limit the number of road accidents due to skidding is to fix a statutory minimum tried depth of tyres. The braking force and side force coefficients of smooth tyres without any tread are appreciably lower than those of tyres with full tread depth. The purpose of the conducted measurements is to gain insight into the trend of these coefficients depending on the tread depth of the tyres. Measurements were performed with four types of tyre on two roads at varying speeds.
