A brief account is given of the 1989 Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) Master Plan for the Disabled which aims to reconcile the needs of the disabled with the limitations of the railway system. In the absence of political backing and legal obligation funding of measures is restricted by the ordinary rail budget. A 22 page brochure entitled 'Information and Tips for Disabled Passengers' gives comprehensive information on facilities available. Further documents list the availability of coaches offering a wheelchair compartment and facilities available at SBB stations. The `green part' of the official timetable also provides information for the disabled. A staff training scheme is being developed and representatives of the disabled are involved in planning new projects. Further details are given of the use of induction loops for the hard of hearing, stair markings, multiple journey cards with a code for the blind, information using large print, braille and on cassettes and touch maps. At Zurich Main Station an extensive pilot project is underway involving colour contrast, platform identification by raised numerals and braille, raised floor markings and direction indicator lamps on escalators.
