Abstract

Progress and contribution of information technology, and developments in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), have brought together several methods for the collection, processing and dissemination of traffic information. The task of gathering the information related to expressways and arterial roads from a number of different sources, processing it, and making it accessible to different organisations is unpretentious by the different communication methodologies presently available. The goal is to be able to provide reliable information to assist people involved in the system to make better co-ordinated decisions in order to meet the ITS objectives of increasing efficiency, safety, productivity, and air quality. Organisations which may have to use such information include the Emergency Services, Traffic Management Centres (TMCs), Broadcasting Media (Radio and Television Corporations), Value Added Service Providers (VASPs) (organisations concerned with the supply of such information) and the motorists. This paper discusses the communication methodology adopted by the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System or (EMAS) in short. It is one of Singapore's first ITS deployment that provides timely dissemination of travel and incident related information along the expressways and adjoining arterial roads leading to the expressways.
