Abstract
This book provides a broad survey of the characteristics, capabilities and limitations of current information retrieval systems operated in an on-line interactive mode. It emphasizes the design, operation and evaluation of such systems from the viewpoint of planning and management. One chapter gives an overall description of existing on-line systems and provides a comprehensive bibliography to further literature. Another chapter describes evaluation techniques applicable to on-line systems. Human factor aspects of on-line retrieval systems are also considered.
