Abstract
In three studies a comparison is made between the Dutch Randstad area, the German Rhein-Ruhr area, and the Belgium Antwerp-Brussels-Ghent region, on: supply and use of the main road network, and on the travel behaviour of the population. A smaller supply and higher mobility of the population cause a more heavily used network in the Randstad area. Because of a better spread over time of day and the different modes, congestion levels do not seem to differ too much. A faster growth of the population in the future could enlarge the problems in the Randstad. Investments in infrastructure are larger in the Randstad. Germany can be an example for the methods that are used to decide where investments are desired. (A)
