Abstract

This paper reviews consumer response to U.S. gasoline shortfalls in 1973-74 and 1979. Response to the 73-74 crisis focused on reductions in non-work travel through trip combining and less frequent travel: little mode shifting or work-related actions were observed. The 1979 response was similar, but the largest amount of energy was saved by fuel-efficient car purchasing.
