Abstract

This report presents the results of the collision coverage loss experience of 1986 model year passenger cars during their first months of availability. 1986 model cars' claim frequencies ranged from 5.5 to 18.4 claims per 100 insured vehicle years, average loss payments per claim from about $1,100 to $2,400, and average loss payments per insured vehicle year from $80 to nearly 370. Collision coverage claim frequencies varied inversely with car size. Findings regarding overall average loss payment per claim increases and comparisons of 1985 and 1986 model year vehicles are also presented.
