Abstract

This report describes the changes in the characteristics of vehicles, highways, drivers, and pedestrians that will present new safety challenges and require innovative solutions. It also notes that the traffic safety community is not well prepared to meet these challenges because of persistent neglect of basic investments in traffic safety research. The report concludes on two notes of optimism: the consumer's increasing interest in vehicle safety, and the public health community's increasing commitment to injury control.
