This article deals with the following subjects: I. The problem of accidental death and injuries - the major classes of accidental death - the age and sex - trends in accident rates - preval ence of non-fatal injuries - II - Research on accidents - problem of definitions - conceptual appraoches (epidemiological model, systems safety analysis). III - Current trends in accident research and the development of counter measures - specific etiology of injury - abnormal exchanges of energy - medical - engineering collaboration in the prevention of injury. IV - Applications of biotechnology to the control of injuries.
