Abstract

The number of casualties seen by doctors during 3 months exceeded the number reported by civil authorities by 26 %. Over 60 % of the severely injured cases were admitted to hospital outside the ordinary working hours of the hospital. In 71.7 % only one road user was injured in the accident, in 16 percent 2 and in 12 % 3 or more persons. In 46 % of the cases multiple injuries of all degrees of severity were recorded. The incidence of multitrauma was highest in pedestrians and motorcyclists and lowest in bus and lorry occupants. In 465 cases followed up 3 years later, the rate of persisting disability of any degree was 6.6 % and of invalidity of 30 % or more was 3.4 %.
