Abstract

The most efficient way to make the use of Daytime Running Lights (DRL) compulsory is a technical measure: to make certain that the lighting of each newly bought vehicle will automatically switch on or off, when starting or turning off the engine. At this moment such a measure is not politically possible within the European Community. It is pointed out that an important deficiency in previous studies is that the relationship between a reduction of the number of accidents and the increasing use of DRL could not be demonstrated in a convincing way. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the measuring system can be shortened or the measuring programme can be stopped in the year 1992, till the technical measure will be implemented. With the help of a model for estimating, it is investigated in which way the measuring system can be shortened and the measurements replaced by the model.
