Abstract

Innovations in transport : searching for success- and failure factors. Many scenario studies and policy plans investigate innovations related to vehicles, fuels, infrastructure, and transport services. However, insight into factors behind success or failure of such innovations is limited. This paper describes a future research project at TU Delft. We provide some basic insights from a recent survey of the literature on success or failure of innovation. As to the methodology, most innovation research uses case studies or engages in the econometric analysis of large databases. In our prospected research, we intend to apply a relatively new method : the LBIO (Literature-Based Innovation Output measurement) method. This method consists of systematically collecting cases of new product announcements in trade and technical journals that cover important sectors of manufacturing or services. By repeatedly surveying the innovators about their specific project, we get more detailed insight at the project level. By collecting several hundred cases, the method is halfway between small-number case studies and large-scale postal surveys. It gives deeper insights about individual projects and still allows for statistical analyse. (Author/publisher)
