Abstract

Since 1994 the Dutch Rijkswaterstaat has worked on optimising the use of its motorways. To make better use of existing infrastructure in The Netherlands, Rijkswaterstaat is experimenting with innovative solutions like narrow lanes, dynamic road marking, closing of ramps during rush hours and even a buffer. In this paper the innovative programme is presented with the goals, the latest experiments and the first results in order to share the objects with other traffic engineers, discuss feasibility in different situations and the relation to European regulations.
