Abstract

An airbag module with adaptive capability can be achieved by several methods. Separate inflators, a single hybrid inflator with multiple heaters, or a dual stage pyrotechnic inflator can all be used to control the inflation level of an airbag. In addition, Pyrotechnically Actuated Venting (PAV) offers an innovative method for regulating airbag inflation energy. PAV allows a controlled amount of gas to be vented out of the module before it enters the cushion. This paper discusses several methods for achieving a variable output airbag module. Static and sled tests were conducted to evaluate PAV in comparison to other adaptive restraint modules. (A)
