Abstract

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) initiated the formation of a Pedestrian and Bicycle Task Force to develop better information for transportation professionals on pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The intent of this report is to identify innovations and share information on their applications, advantages and disadvantages. Approximately 50 treatments are summarised in this report. These treatments include on-street innovations such as contra-flow bike lanes, shared bike/bus lanes, bike boulevards, raised bike lanes and coloured bike lanes. The eight sections of the technical report include: bicycle lane and path treatments; treatments for bicycles at intersections; bicycle sensitive detection and counters; bicycle signage; traffic calming accommodations for bicycles; bicycle parking; other innovations.
