Abstract

The GUIDEMAPS project (Gaining Understanding of Improved Decision Making and Participation Strategies) is a European Commission funded study to identify barriers to successful decision making and to develop guidelines andtools for overcoming the barriers. The project included a survey to examine current practice in Europe. Case studies are presented of the re-designof a major inner-city ring road in Cologne, Germany and of the implementation of the Urban Mobility Plan in Paris/Ile de France. In both cases, web-based engagement tools were developed to communicate with the public. Thetwo websites are described and the limitations and benefits of both systems are described. These engagement tools plus other tools examined under the GUIDEMAPS project will be incorporated within a practical guide to successful transport decision-making.
