Abstract

The innovative reality of working with MON. In 2004 the AVV Transport Research Centre (AVV) started its own passenger travel survey: Mobiliteitsonderzoek Nederland (MON), a successor to the OVG. One precondition was that there should be no discontinuities between data. At the same time, the AVV’s ambition was to make the survey demand-led, provide preliminary figures, provide annual figures faster, and fully record daily mobility across the Belgian and German borders. Now that four additional surveys are running, the MON is indeed demand-led; all daily journeys across the borders are being coded; and preliminary figures are being produced. To encourage quality and innovation we wish to interact with people related to MON in an open and active manner. The user group, expert group, MON internet site and MON email address are concrete examples of this. The many reactions we are getting show that this works. In order to better inform our users we will in future include the possibilities and limitations of the MON in the documentation. A quality statement about the MON is available. Innovation has been made a structural part of the project thanks to a long list of possible innovations that is kept continuously up-to-date, and from which, twice a year, we choose those that will be implemented. So far we have been doing pioneering work. Even though the CBS is helping us, things are done differently at the AVV. The innovative reality of working with the MON consists of hard work, assessment sessions – not only as a project team but also together with users, experts and survey staff – and, last but not least, “celebration moments”: coffee and cakes to celebrate what has been achieved and to gather new energy and inspiration for the future.
