Abstract

While the 1986 and 1993 editions of the AASHTO Guide for the Design of Pavement Structures recognized the importance of moving towards machanistic based design procedures, limitations on computer speed, modeling techniques, and pavement performance data made the implementation of mechanistic based designs difficult at that time. The 2002 Design Guide will contain procedures for the design and analysis of all types of new and rehabilitated pavement systems. Where feasible, the design methodologies for the various pavement types will be integrated, such that the design procedure does not inherently favour any particular type of pavement. Further, the mechanistic-empirical design procedure to be included in the 2002 Guide will allow the designer to evaluate the effects of variations in materials on pavement performance. This paper discusses the new data input requirements for the design procedures described in the 2002 Guide. For the covering abstract of this conference, see ITRD number E211217.
