Abstract

The European Union (EU) Directive INSPIRE is setting the legal framework for the establishment and operation of an infrastructure for spatial information in Europe. The implementation of the Directive will be regulated byImplementing Rules describing requirements concerning metadata, data specifications, network services, data sharing, coordination as well as reporting monitoring the effects of the Directive. Data specifications for the theme Transport Networks, defined as road, rail, air and water transport networks and related infrastructure and links between different networks, have been worked out during 2008. After a reviewing and testing process, the specifications were been handed over to the Commission by end of June 2009 for the final preparation of legal binding regulation. The Implementing Rules are supposed to be decided by end of 2009. The paper will inform about the specifications and the coming effects on the European IntelligentTransportation System (ITS) sector.
