Abstract

Mumbai suburban rail system, one of the biggest systems in the world, has performed remarkably well in the past. However, infrastructure development and augmentation of rolling stock have not kept pace with traffic growth, resulting into acute overcrowding. The system is in need of major investment. At present, responsibility of funding rests solely with Indian Railways, which is unable to meet the requirement. Other financing options need to be explored. This will need changes in the present institutional setup. (A) The French title of this paper is: "Options institutionnelles et financières pour le système ferroviaire suburbain de Mumbaï".
