Abstract

The institutional framework of road safety is examined from the standpoint of it being a public issue. The division of responsibility (state and local governments) and national coordination are discussed along with the role of the Commonwealth of Australia, the Australian National Office of Road Safety, the creation of an advisory committee, low cost improvement projects, the Commonwealth Aid Roads Act, and the development of national highways.
