Abstract

In the project presented here the purpose is to discuss conditions and problems after the unification of Germany. The German unification brought new challenges. There was not only the new emphasis on east-west traffic, but also the transfer of a considerable proportion of the traffic from railways to the highways in the former GDR. And there was also the rapid increase in motorization. Traffic densities on the highways of the new federal states had increased to an extent never experienced before. The highway network was in no way ready to carry such loads. This paper deals with road infrastructure, road safety and accident development, but should be regarded as a first intermediate report.
