Abstract

In 1964 it was decided to develop a special Instrumented Car for Road User Studies (ICARUS) with a very wide range of experimental facilities. Since then the car has developed into a "general purpose driving laboratory that has been used in various more or less complex experimental studies of actual driver behaviour". The automobile is a Peugeot 404 and is equipped with apparatus which can measure, the interaction between car and driver, and between driver and road. The processing of the outputs is described. The applications of the car are mentioned.
