Integral Approach to the Evaluation of HMI for ADAS – Methodology and Tools.

Abstract

Safety impact of new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can be compromised by their interaction with the driver. An inadequate human machineinterface (HMI) can increase the workload of the driver giving way to distraction, a lack of attention or increasing dangerously the reaction time.To reduce this negative impact, advanced methodologies and tools are required in order to test and evaluate the HMI in the different stages of the system development. In this paper the Centro Tecnologico de Automocion deGalicia (CTAG) proposes a methodology that integrates different advanced tools and techniques, some of them internally developed, including Focus Group sessions, dynamic driving simulator studies and tests with real prototypes. To illustrate this methodology, an example of HMI evaluation for anADAS system is described. Main results and conclusions of the applicationof these techniques are finally outlined.
