Abstract

The aims of this study are: a) the estimation of the total future transport volume (by road, rail water, pipelines and air) in the Netherlands for the years 1980, 1990 and 2000; b) the adjunctive estimation of the total need for inter-local highways and railways for the same years from a forecast on the direction and extent of traffic flows between the various transport poles; and c) the estimation of the extent of the investment needs with respect to b. The main report presents a survey of the methods applied, the hypotheses used, and a summary of the results as well as conclusions and recommendations. The seven annexes present: I. The general backgrounds; II. The demographical, social and spatial aspects; III. Passenger transport; IV. Freight transport; V. Optimum development of the road network; VI. Optimum development of rail network; and VII. Price-mechanism, investment, financing.
