Abstract

IN THE CALSPAN RSV, DESIGN PRIORITY WAS PLACED ON (1) IMPROVED CRASHWORTHINESS AND (2) PEDESTRIAN INJURY REDUCTION. IN ADDITION, THE GOALS WERE: TO ATTAIN GOOD FUEL ECONOMY, TO MAINTAIN OR IMPROVE ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE PERFORMANCE, AND TO MEET OR EXCEED US DAMAGE PROTECTION STANDARDS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CALSPAN RSV AND INTEGRATED GOALS AND PERFORMANCE. AN ASSESSMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS WAS MADE. THE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED, PARTICULARLY THE FRONT STRUCTURE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CALSPAN RSV HAS ACHIEVED A HIGH LEVEL OF SAFETY PERFORMANCE BUT HAS ALSO RETAINED GOOD FUEL ECONOMY IN A DESIGN THAT'S HIGHLY PRODUCIBLE AT ONLY A MODERATE INCREASE IN CONSUMER COST. FUNCTIONAL ADEQUACY IN ALL ASPECTS OF AUTOMOTIVE PERFORMANCE WAS RETAINED. THIS INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH AN EXTENSIVE PROCESS OF TRADE-OFFS.
