Abstract

This paper will review recent work in Wellington’s central city developing on Danish urban designer Jan Gehl’s philosophy that cities are for people. Wellington City Council has commissioned Gehl to assess the state of the central city in terms of the public spaces which includes the street network. Also a recent piece of work that Wellington City Council has undertaken develops what Wellington’s sense of place is. How transport planning in the urban environment fits into these concepts will be further developed. The relationship between the motorway – including the proposed bypass and the waterfront quays route will be assessed. How does the city function as a conduit for through traffic while maintaining a vibrant and diverse urban environment for all? What are the relationships to public transport and parking to enhance accessibility to the central city? Current and proposed Council policy will be reviewed showing the on ground reality and visions for Wellington’s central city.
