Abstract

The requirement for traffic information is analysed. A system architecture for providing traffic information is described which uses traffic sensors and a travel time measuring system. The processing system at the control centre is VICS (Vehicle Information and Communication System)/AMIS (Advanced Mobile Information System) and the display systems are described. An infrared beacon provides vehicle on-board units with up-to-date information with telephone and fax providing information for the general public. The system was implemented on three routes in Oita City, Japan. Marked reductions in congestion and journey times were achieved. For the covering abstract see ITRD E209471.
