Abstract

Transport Canada and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario are jointly developing an Integrated Traffic System (ITS). This system is being designed to enable the optimization of traffic flow on the existing roadways. The ITS system will contain a database management system for the traffic data (including accidents, roadway volumes, and signal timing details) and link this database to the traffic analysis programs. This will ease the data management situation within the municipalities as well as standardizing the traffic operations and reducing duplication of computerization developmental efforts. Although the ITS system is still under development, there is a significant demand for the system. Early releases, further development efforts and a self supporting users group are all currently being pursued. For related work see IRRD 290923.
