Abstract

This short paper briefly describes the method used in Holland to provide public transport in rural areas to the physically handicapped. The approach was applied experimentally to a large area. By analysing both local sources and the range of potential integration concepts it seems possible to create an area wide mosaic of optimal solutions. The methods used involved: a) "time-sharing" vehicles, where a voluntary organization can use the bus belonging to a welfare organization to provide an off-peak service; b) the "multibus" concept, where a voluntary organization finances one type of transport by another (school transport for example); c) local dial a ride services; and d) adapting the present public transport system to cater for the disabled. Examples from Sellingen and Stadskanaal are provided.
