Abstract

This guide provides examples of opportunities for integrating the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual into the project development process. This includes integrating methods from the Highway Safety Manual into planning, alternatives development and analysis, design, operations, and maintenance. The guide provides a description of each of these steps in the project development process, and then provides a discussion of the methods from the Highway Safety Manual, and in some cases other resources, that support these steps. The application of safety analysis tools such as the Integrated Highway Safety Design Model, SafetyAnalyst, the CMF Clearinghouse, and example spreadsheet tools are discussed. Resources from FHWA and NCHRP are also presented. The purpose of this guide is to provide the practitioners with examples and ideas for integrating safety performance measures into the project development process. (Author/publisher)
