Abstract

The need for improved efficiency in bus operations in London has led to the deployment of a wide range of Intelligent Transport System applications, particularly related to bus priority, network management and real time passenger information systems. Projects in recent EC framework programmes such as PROMPT and INCOME resulted in the development and trial of advanced ITS applications which are now being integrated and extended towards large scale implementation across London. This paper describes this implementation process from a number of perspectives, including system architectures, system commissioning, economic performance and the development of guidelines to maximise the effectiveness of the systems. The paper concludes with an outlook for further implementation and integration of ITS applications for buses in London.
