Intelligent road for intelligent vehicles : scenarios of an integrated traffic control and management systems on motorways.

Abstract

This article presents an argument to advocate the provision of more driver information systems both on motorways and inside cars which would together increase motorway safety. It is proposed that such systems would enable some; and eventually all, of the driving tasks to be automated. Several levels of automation are envisaged. The following systems are envisaged: (1) Early warning systems, that would merely warn the driver and the emergency services of an accident or other emergency that has already happened; (2) Medium range pre-information (MRP), which warns the driver and traffic control personnel of potential incidents well in advance of their happening; (3) ICC (intelligent cruise control). This is a system that automatically controls the car so that, when operating in one lane only, it keeps the correct distance from the car in front and remains within the correct speed limit; and (4) IMC (intelligent manoeuvring and control). This automatic Vehicle Control System operates on two lanes, and controls lane changing, overtaking and merging. Details of vehicle controls and network architecture such as roadside beacons required to implement such a system are discussed. An example of such a system the Easy Driver System which is under installation on the Padova-Venezia motorway is presented and discussed.
